A Newspaper Article About a Song About a Newspaper Article

July 11, 2011
By

As all songs in SpinTunes 3 Round 2 had to be, my entry, Program aids food stamp users, was based on a newspaper article, initially one from the Poughkeepsie Journal’s Northern Dutchess Focus then also informed by one from the Millerton News / TriCorner News.

I thought those papers would be interested to know about a song based on an article, and the Millerton News ended up interviewing me. The story appeared in the Millerton News and at the TriCorner News website last Thursday, July 7. At the site, only subscribers can read the full text, but the editors of the Millerton News have graciously given me permission to reprint the full article right here. Enjoy!

Incidentally, my song tied for 4th out of a field of 21 songs. Time to move onto Round 3.

Local ‘Health Bucks’ program inspires original song

MILLERTON — The Offhand Band, based out of Red Hook, was recently inspired to write a song about the Health Bucks program after reading about the program in the Poughkeepsie Journal and The Millerton News.

The program, which is run by the North East Community Center (NECC) and funded by Sharon Hospital, allows people who use food stamps to receive discounts at the Millerton and Amenia farmers markets.

The song, entitled “Program Aids Food Stamp Users,” was written for an online song-writing competition called SpinTunes, which challenged song writers who made it past the first elimination round to use a recent newspaper article as the basis for the song.

Mark Merrit, the songwriter and sole member of The Offhand Band, wrote on his website about the contest and his process of creating the song.

“I don’t subscribe to any newspapers. I hardly ever read any newspapers. I don’t watch much news on television or read much on the Internet,” he wrote.

He said that the reason behind that was because the news is “just not relevant in my life or the lives of anyone I know.” That lead him to search for a story that “exemplified the notion of little things meaning a lot, a story that might be as especially impacting for someone’s life as the vast majority of news stories, especially the larger ones, are fundamentally meaningless to most of us.”

In an email conversation, he said he hopes that his song shows people how much the little things can make a big difference.

“The basic idea is that what’s really important are the things that can make a significant impact in the lives of ourselves and others,” he said.

On his website he described the story he wrote into the song about a person who is receiving food stamps who is also “aware of the difference between globalized, factory-farmed foods and local fare which [is] healthier both physiologically and economically.”

The lyrics of the song are written in the same style as a newspaper article in terms of the word choice, style and punctuation. Merrit stated that the use of attributions in the song, like “Johnson said,” gave “some nice newspaper ambience while also stressing that the song is giving voice to someone who normally might not be covered by the media.”

The song debuted during the SpinTunes Listening Party on Tuesday, July 5. It will be available for a free download on www.theoffhandband.com and on the SpinTunes website, www.spintunes.blogspot.com.

Merrit said that the main purpose of The Offhand Band, particularly the first album, “Everyone’s Invited,” is “to create songs that could be enjoyed by all ages, together or on their own, and that would provide a generally positive outlook that would encourage people to make good things happen for themselves and others.”

He noted that not all of his more recent songs were created to serve that original goal.

The Creative Process: How Appreciative Inquiry and Internal Family Systems Invited Everyone to Make Everyone’s Invited

September 12, 2009
By

I’d been meaning from the start to tell the story of the making of the album Everyone's Invited, because I felt the way it was made was maybe as significant as the album itself. Now I’ve finally had the chance, and the results may be some of the most worthwhile writings I’ve ever published.

Making this album was a truly unique experience for me, not only because it was the first time I’d taken on making an album. It was novel because of the particular way I went about the project. It was guided by two influences that at first glance may not seem to have anything to do with making albums: Appreciative Inquiry and Internal Family Systems. I don’t want to spoil the story by telling too much of it right here! For now, then, suffice it to say this:

AI started as an organizational development process and philosophy. The IFS model is a way of understanding the human mind that informs some particularly effective methods of psychotherapy. Both of these things turn out to be useful in lots of other places, though, far beyond the business meeting and the psychologist’s couch. Of all the ideas and tools I’ve ever come across, AI and IFS are both near the top of the list of things that have the potential to bring about real and lasting positive change for people, whether individuals or groups of whatever size.

And Everyone's Invited wouldn’t exist without them. Indeed, the whole album was created because of these two things and how I used them together.

I’d made the album as something for kids and adults to enjoy together. Beyond entertainment was the hope that people might actually get something out of the songs, something they could use to make good things happen for themselves. Now, I have to add another layer to all of this. I hope that, in discovering the story of how the album and songs were created, people will enjoy gaining some insight into the creative process, but even more I hope that they may learn that creative processes in general — including making good things happen for each other — can be helped along tremendously by harnessing the power of Appreciative Inquiry and the Internal Family Systems model.

The album and song posts all now include their stories. To hear the whole tale as it happened, start with the story of the album as a whole, followed by the stories of each individual song in the order they were written:

At the bottom of each song’s story you’ll find a link to the story of whatever song was written next, so you’ll be able to easily follow the entire story from beginning to end.

I encourage you to add your comments to any and all of the individual album/song posts, letting me know your reactions to each of the stories.

Also, share your own stories — of art or other things that have inspired you, of how you came to do something artistic or creative, of how the OHB’s songs have impacted you, whatever you like — at the Fan Clan.

Airplay on WPRB’s All-Ages Show

August 27, 2009
By

Just learned that some songs from Everyone's Invited have been played on The All-Ages Show on WPRB 103.3 FM out of Princeton, NJ. Hosted by Paddy and his partner Eddap (species unrevealed), it’s a show “where we play music that’s not just for grownups.”

They played Getting Somewhere on July 11 and The Animal School on July 18.

Like every crawl or step or new word spoken by a baby, every bit of this kind of thing out there is a big deal for this still very new album and band. So hurray :)

Interviewed on the Brent & Woofy Radio Show

August 24, 2009
By

A while back I mentioned that I’d been interviewed about our debut album, Everyone's Invited, for an upcoming episode of the Brent & Woofy Radio Show. Well, upcoming came and went! The interview aired on August 2 on CHLY 101.7 FM out of Nanaimo, BC. I’m not sure if it’s aired yet on CJAM 91.5 FM out of Windsor, ON, and Detroit, MI, since Brent doesn’t know either.

I knew before the 2nd that that’s when it would air on CHLY, but there had been some technical difficulties with the MP3 on Brent & Woofy’s website, so I didn’t post anything. I realize now I should have, just in case anyone near CHLY might have come across our own site here and wanted to listen to the interview on the radio! Apologies to anyone who fits that description.

Things have been sorted out as of just today, though, so you can now listen to the entire interview on MP3. The file will stay up for another several weeks, probably until early October, after which you can visit the Radio Show’s main page for information on how to contact Brent to download the episode.

Check it out!

Just Got Interviewed for the Brent & Woofy Radio Show

Earlier this week, I heard from Brent Boehler of Brent & Woofy. Brent also writes and performs original songs for kids and families, and Woofy is his buddy, a dog who happens to be a puppet who happens to be voiced by Brent through ventriloquism. In addition to their own albums, shows and all sorts of other things, they’ve got their very own radio show. After receiving a copy of Everyone's Invited, Brent asked me to do a telephone interview for the show.

I just got off the phone with Brent a few minutes ago. He’s quite a nice guy, and the interview was really enjoyable. It will air on the Brent & Woofy Radio Show in a few weeks on CHLY 101.7 FM out of Nanaimo, BC, then sometime after that on CJAM 91.5 FM out of Windsor, ON, and Detroit, MI. The show will also be available to listen to online through Brent & Woofy’s website.

I’ll post links when more info is available. In the meantime, there’s plenty of other cool stuff to check out from Brent & Woofy. Enjoy!

Root & Sprout Reviews Everyone’s Invited

February 13, 2009
By

Everyone's Invited has just received its first published review, from parenting website Root & Sprout. The album was reviewed by Lis Garrett and Kids. Lis is the senior editor and a contributing writer for Root & Sprout. We’re pleased to say that they enjoyed the album. Some quotes:

“… a distinctly different sound from the standard kid fare.”

“… brilliantly written lyrics…”

“… an eclectic sampling of funky, kid-friendly and parent-approved music that will have your little one jumpin’ and jivin’.”

“If you can stop rockin’ long enough to digest the lyrics, you just might wonder if Mark isn’t perhaps the most astute parent to have ever composed children’s music; he really has a knack for capturing the mentality of a kid.”

“… I can totally envision The Offhand Band becoming a popular household name.”

“… these songs just have a way of getting stuck in your head.”

Songs from Everyone’s Invited Receive Live Premiere

November 20, 2008
By

Last night, I performed as part of Transformational Conversations 5th Anniversary Benefit, a fundraiser created by my friend Lisa Giruzzi. Lisa and her husband Bill introduced me to Appreciative Inquiry, which I later came to use for artistic creation, including the creation of Everyone's Invited, both the album as a whole as well as each individual song.

The theme of Lisa’s event was “One Big Dream…Changes Everything!!” With our mutual friend Steph Campbell on vocals, I performed two songs from Everyone's InvitedGo Get It and On the Way. The audience seemed to enjoy the songs, especially the opportunity to sing along with the chorus of Go Get It.

So a couple of the songs from the album have now started a life beyond the album itself, into the world of live performance, and at some point I hope to have video of these performance up here at the site.

Kids Sampling the Songs

November 12, 2008
By

This morning, we had a two-hour delay which turned into a full day off due to, what do they call it?, something like non-weather-related circumstances. It was a bomb threat. In any case, the two kids we watch in the morning were here with my daughter, and they cracked out Everyone's Invited — I didn’t have anything to do with it, I swear :)

They listed to a couple of songs, and then they would listen to each song for about 10 seconds and skip ahead to the next. I wasn’t sure if they were just not liking what they heard or if that’s just how they felt like listening at the moment. I’m fine if it was the first, but I actually think it was the second, since there were a few songs listened to that way that I know for sure my daughter likes.

Part of me was tempted to say, “Hey, why don’t you listen to the whole song?” But I didn’t. Who knows, I thought there must be some use for them in listening that way!
